To be defensive, one must always be prepared to protect or defend themselves or another person. This can create an “at the ready” stance that is innately combative. It can also be developed from hypersensitivity or deep anxiety to avoid challenges, confrontations, or criticism.
Planets & Aspects That Affect Defensiveness
Several of the planetary archetypes can hint at different kinds of defensiveness.
The Moon is an innately receptive luminary—it does not like change and is very emotional, so when it moves through a more cautious or passive zodiac sign, we may feel a bit touchier. It would create emotional defensiveness.
Mars, as the planet of war and aggression, is predominantly a dominant and abrasive planet—so it does not actually denote defensiveness, in general. It can make someone more likely to be combative in order to protect oneself or their ideas, though. It creates abrupt defensiveness.
Mercury, as the planet of the mind, is a neutral energy, whereas the Sun is tied to our life force and innate self.
When any of these planets experience a square, opposition, or even potentially a conjunction with any other planet—there is a possibility for conflict, tension, and yes—defensiveness—especially if the planet has more intense correspondences.
Furthermore, Neptune (confusion and delusion) and Uranus (chaos and surprise) both create destabilizing effects on the other planets. Saturn (challenges) and Pluto (power struggles) would most notably affect conflicts, too, especially in a square, opposition, or conjunction.

Technically, any house that Mars, Saturn, Uranus, or Pluto are within will have somewhat of a touchy feel to it. This applies to one’s natal chart as well as when they move through the zodiac signs. We are more on edge when these energies are activated by a planetary aspect.

Collectively, we feel “off” whenever any planet is transiting a zodiac sign that is known to be its detriment or fall. This is because the planet cannot express its innate strengths or blessings well—it feels blocked and stifled, which causes the human world to feel that way, too. Typically, though, we may be more defensive as a people when Mars transits Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, or Pisces. Scorpio is a co-ruler of Mars, so that can be an especially powerful period to take action, but because of the Fixed modality and Water sign nature of Scorpio, it can also be an especially passive-aggressive time.
